Sun Microsystems has released three security advisories announcing five vulnerabilities that affect all previous versions of Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) running on Windows, Solaris and Linux platforms. By enticing a user to a malicious website or sending a user an HTML e-mail, an attacker can exploit any of these vulnerabilities to read and write to local files on a user's hard drive, or even to execute local applications on a user's PC. If a user has local administrative privileges, the attacker could potentially exploit this flaw to gain complete control of the machine. Visit Sun's website to download the latest version of the JRE.
