The result is one of Michigan's largest environmental disasters ever.This oil spill has greatly affected our waters, land, wildlife, and much more. In an effort to support the clean up efforts and wildlife rescue, these 9 amazing Grand... Rapids acts have offered to perform in support of the Circle D Wildlife Refuge. Circle D Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife refuge and rehabilitation center located in Vicksburg, MI. They are entirely non-profit and work with deer, small mammals, flighted birds and waterfowl. Their work is 100-percent volunteer-based.Please come and support our local music and this great cause! We will have entertainment, live art, merchandise, drink specials and giveaways! Welcome to The Mitten. For better or worse we signed up for this place and this is where we live. Resting on a backdrop of beautiful oceans of fresh water juxtaposed to the ghosts of mechanized industrial livelihoods, Michigan is one of the most interesting places on earth. The Upper Peninnsula gave you the iron for your steel (thanks Ohio, sorry about the war). If you are sitting in a chair, it was most likely designed or manufactured here. We brought you cars, delicious fruit, pasties, Michael Moore, The Wings, The Pistons (don't worry about the Lions). In a post outsourcing world we have felt the hardships, usually the worst, but when time gets tough people create, and considering the amount of tough times we've had, there are plenty of songs to write.While Detroit is a world-renown pillar of exceptional musical offerings, her sister Grand Rapids on the west side of the state has had some quite impressive gems. Al Green, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mustard Plug, The Verve Pipe, and James Maynard Keenan of Tool all hail from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids is a beautiful midwestern city littered with college campuses and churches. The dichotomy of old guard Protestant suits juxtaposed to the Bohemian intelligentsia - this town is sweltering with creativity.So the Prospecto family decided it was our duty to pull off a showcase for the great talent in Michigan and in doing so we invited some friends from around the country to anchor in support. Excellent Nationals, excellent locals, with one common thread- giving you an excellent experience. So get over to Grand Rapids, September 23 -25th, the Mitten is kind.Prospecto Musical Showcase and Sonic Experience is the newest in a long line of great musical events nationwide. The Sparta Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the annual Harvest on the Ridge Apple Festival the last weekend in September. The Apple Festival is a family oriented event celebrating the harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables in grown in Sparta, Michigan. As a gateway to “the Ridge“, a geographically prime and pristine area for growing fruits and vegetables, Sparta is a perfect place to find fresh picked and u-pick grown crops each growing season, follow color tours bursting with brilliant reds and yellows, and create a memory picking out your very own pumpkin to carve. In addition to the world class farmers markets and farm tours, the Harvest on the Ridge BBQ Contest held in downtown Sparta is an attraction for locals and visitors alike to smell and experience the professionals at work. He's got a surly, drank-too-much-last-night-and-now-I-gotta-perform attitude, a killer take-no-shit slogan ("You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas"), and even an authentic trucker cap (no Hot Topic poseury here). One can hear wisps of such late greats as Jimmie Rodgers or even Huddie Ledbetter in VandenAvond's songs, which alternate between good ol' country and low-key folksy ballads about murdering cops in churches and other lurid subjects.His vocals are rich with twang and as raw as whiskey, and he could quite possibly match Tom Waits someday for grit, as he croons out subdued menace at times. But even when VandenAvond spins a yarn in "Lost on the Bottle" about possibly engaging in alcohol-fueled spousal abuse ("Some days I got mean things on my mind/There's an odd chance I might treat that woman unkind/If she don't pay me mind she might wind up in the pines"), you get the feeling it's sung with a playful wink.Nobody's DarlinAn all-girl string band based in Grand Rapids, MI.
